Airtight and Weathertight Sealing Tapes
Why the Connections Matter Most
A membrane covers the middle of a wall, which is the part that was never going to leak. What actually determines whether an assembly performs is the joins: laps between sheets, the junction where the wall meets the slab, around every window and door, and every pipe, cable and duct that penetrates the envelope.
Blower door testing consistently finds the same leak paths. Service penetrations. Window and door perimeters. The junction between the ceiling and the wall top plate. Not one of those is a membrane failure. They are connection failures.
This is also where cost-cutting shows up. Ordinary packing tape and builders tape will hold for the inspection and let go within a few years, taking the performance of the whole assembly with it. Sealing tapes are engineered for decades of adhesion on construction substrates, and Pro Clima’s are tested accordingly.
Sealing Tapes
TESCON EXTORA is the general purpose external sealing tape, for lapping and sealing weather resistive barriers. Works on damp and cold substrates and on rough surfaces where an ordinary tape will not bond.
TESCON EXTOSEAL is a wider window sill and flashing tape, for sealing the base of window openings where water collects.
TESCON NAIDECK is a double sided self-sealing strip for sealing beneath battens and counter battens. Where a fixing penetrates the membrane, the strip closes around the fastener.
TESCON PRIMER RP prepares porous, dusty or difficult substrates so the tapes bond reliably. On masonry, concrete, fibre cement or dusty timber, priming is the difference between a seal that lasts and one that does not.
Window and Door Connections
Window perimeters are the most common failure point in an otherwise well built envelope. The opening has to be weathertight on the outside, airtight on the inside, and able to accommodate movement between the window frame and the structure without tearing.
CONTEGA EXO is the external window and door connection strip. It is flexible, non-wicking and vapour permeable, with slack built in to allow for relative movement over time. It works on timber, masonry and concrete, and the fleece side can be plastered or rendered over.
Available in 85mm and 120mm widths depending on the reveal depth and the detail.
Primers, Adhesives and Grommets
DUPLEX is a double sided tape for permanently bonding membrane overlaps and end laps, and for temporarily fixing membranes to steel structures before mechanical fastening. Scrim reinforced so it stays thin.
ROFLEX grommets seal around pipe and cable penetrations. The grommet stretches over the penetration and seals against it, which is faster and more reliable than trying to tape a circular penetration by hand.
Questions About Sealing and Detailing
Can I use standard builders tape instead?
Not if the seal needs to last. Sealing tapes are tested for long term adhesion on construction substrates under temperature and humidity cycling. General purpose tapes are not, and they typically fail within a few years, after the wall is closed up.
Do I need to prime before taping?
On clean, dry, smooth timber or membrane surfaces, usually not. On masonry, concrete, fibre cement, dusty or porous surfaces, yes. Priming takes minutes and removes the most common cause of tape failure.
What temperature can I apply these at?
Most of the range applies down to low temperatures and on damp substrates, but check the technical data for the specific product. Adhesion in cold or wet conditions is exactly where cheaper tapes fail.
How do I seal a large or irregular penetration?
For round penetrations, use a ROFLEX grommet. For irregular ones, a liquid applied flashing or a combination of tape and sealant. If you are not sure, ask before you improvise.
Do the tapes need to be rolled?
Yes. Pressure sensitive adhesives need firm pressure to wet out properly against the substrate. Press the full length with a roller or a firm hand, not just the ends.
