We supply hardware stores and trade merchants down the Mid North Coast from our warehouse at Pearces Creek, covering Grafton, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Port Macquarie and Taree.
It is a long coastline with a lot of building happening on it, and until recently most of the specialist membrane product in the region came up from Sydney or across from Brisbane. Supplying it from the Northern Rivers is a shorter run and a more sensible one.
Building on an Exposed Coastline
The Mid North Coast sits mostly in ABCB climate zone 2, shading toward zone 5 inland and in the higher country west of the escarpment. On the coast itself, three things drive the envelope design.
Wind-driven rain. Coastal exposure means water arrives horizontally, and it finds its way through cladding joints that would never leak inland. The membrane behind the cladding is doing real work here, not sitting there as a code compliance item.
Salt. Salt-laden air corrodes fixings and degrades materials that were never tested for it. It also means anything relying on a mechanical fixing to stay sealed is a maintenance item, which is an argument for adhesive-sealed junctions over taped-and-fixed ones near the coast.
Humidity and drying. High ambient humidity year round means assemblies dry slowly. A wall that gets wet in March may still be wet in June. Vapour permeable membranes and ventilated cavities are how you keep the drying rate ahead of the wetting rate.
Buildings within a few kilometres of the beach are a different proposition to buildings twenty kilometres inland, and the specification should reflect that.
